Very true. My grandmother graduated HS, she played piano by ear, and was a full charge bookkeeper. She married later (oh the gossip) and a secret shared with me once, she was older than Zadie. Some things that would now never bat an eye. Times changed and amazingly they both went with the flow of change. They called it progress.

My maternal grandparents married twice.
Secretly the first time and then a second time with their parents making the wedding for them.

How funny. My maternal grandparents did just the same thing.

 

Migrate to the Netherlands, we have some excellent gluten-free bread, even in our main supermarket chain.
Also nice croissants, muffins, brioches, but those are sold in specialist gluten-free shops.

 

Nom! Noodles are easier - just hit up an Asian grocery for rice, bean thread, tapioca etc. Thankfully I'm almost gluten-mandatory at this point.

 

There are things that can be subbed or replaced with. I am about to start experimenting with sorghum flour for some recipes. I had made a cookie a few months back with it for a friend with celiac & it was on her approved list. It is sweeter to me so sugar can be adjusted. I have tasted gf breads, cookies etc some are sweeter in taste & some sugar companies I have noticed have been making the grains size larger which means it won’t blend in well.

 

I snagged some cans of Kosher for Passover macaroons at the end of Passover and stashed them in the basement. (dehumidifier running naturally) Brought a can to a church function and made some folks with Celiac quite happy. No need to worry about the ingredient list.

 

Feed the church goers kosher jewish food....

Darned tootin'. A significant number have Jewish ancestry. An even bigger percentage (including the pastor) are Catholic refugees.

 

I love it. I make those very often one of hubbys favorite cookies. I’m not a big sweets eater unless it’s ice cream.

 

The homemade ones are yummier, but around here I've never even heard of anyone baking them. My mother isn't fond of coconut, so although I'd bet my grandfather knew how she never learned.

 

They're incredibly easy to make.

 

One of the easiest. Usually it’s one of the first I teach kids how to bake for that reason.

I don't know if it's the best discussion to post that, but I just found a nice wooden Corpus Christi here in Switzerland ! I'm pretty new to the antique world and I'm still learning a lot, but I'd love to know approximatively what period it is ! I know sometimes some details can help, but I'm not informed enough about it.

If you guys need anything else, just let me know ! It's around 60 cm and it was really cheap compared to 19th/20th century wooden Corpus Christi I already found.

Nice piece of carving. We don't get those here in the USA, at least not the old ones.

You found a stunning Corpus, excellent quality.
It is certainly antique, but the age is very difficult to assess.
This realistic style was already carved in the 15th century by Tilman Riemenschneider from Würzburg, for instance, but it is still being made.

With other subjects we can look at the position of the arms, the style of clothing, hair or jewellery, or the way the folds are draped, to assess an age. A Corpus obviously doesn't have all that, it is a pretty set iconography.

My advice is to send the photos to a museum with a good collection of religious art and a specialised department.
And please let us know what they say, we always love to know.

I'm really curious on if it's pretty recent or if it maybe could be older, so I'll do my best to have an approximation and keep you informed if I ever have an answer !!

 

It is antique, no doubt about it. The question is how antique, and where from. I guess Ticino is mainly Catholic, but he could be more northern, Germany or even the Low Countries.

 

Not in Switzerland, but I do know a Dutch museum on religious art, the Catharijne Convent in Utrecht, a former convent. Unlike some other museums, they are happy to help the public.
