    Hi Everyone,

Is anyone able to identify the maker of this cup & saucer?

    TIA,

I guess it was decorated by a 3rd party, and what you see on the bottom is the remains of their mark. Unless you can find other examples of the decor or the shape, you are unlikely to identify maker or decorator.

It's very pretty. Made for show rather than use.

Thank you for your feedback. The mark on the bottom is actually just residue from a sticker, so there don't seem to be any makers' marks at all.

Now that I look at it more, it does have similarities with early 19th century John Ridgeway. Does anyone else see it? Also, does the peeling on the underside look like it might be a soft paste piece?

That decoration style is slightly odd. The scene is trying to be Chinese with ginkgo trees, but the gilding and cup shape are English.

At first glance, I also thought chinoiserie, but looking closer, I'm thinking there are pine trees and steeples with crosses.

There's certainly a steeple and cross, but the trees look more gingko. Mind you, we'd imported them by then.

I'm sort of wondering if this was made in China, the polychrome done there, and the gilded clobbering here. We did that a lot.

Rather naïve painting. Bit of an oddity.

Late eighteenth and early nineteenth figural painting of this type on China was often rather naive. No photography, so relied on copying. The great artists were those who studied botany say, or some animal painters.

Can you add a photo of the cup standing on a flat surface with handle to one side . Can’t really check in the shapes book with it in your hand

Checking through the Berthoud anthology the closest shapes I can find are these. Both are by Yates and date c1825-1835 IMG_1424.jpeg
