Poor thing. Beauty marred by overbite and weak chin. Still early Victorian. Wonder if background typical of Romantic era.

Oh, no. She's lovely but she's not a perfect beauty.

Yeah I know what you're saying deb, meaning she could have been without that imperfection

Just on the OP, she looks like she has been done from a photo by the (not professional) artist. I think Asian descent also for the subject, just the shading has been a bit heavy handed making her complexion appear darker than it would have been. I think an image of a refugee, but not necessarily one arriving in the UK, maybe from a press photo.

In terms of artistic quality, it's expressive for sure - my feel is that it might be a 60s student work. Regarding quality, the face is not very well rendered IMO - it's overworked, with the mouth not quite in the right place and the shading is too far forward on the shadow side which gives her a slightly 'squished' appearance.

However, it's a nice idea - to play up the prettiness of the outfit, to imagine her in her full personhood and gift her a little beauty for her life. It's very emotive, I can see why you like it!

All good points and observations Kylie

On first view I thought the same, but ended up being seduced by the emotive quality of it

The lack or sign of her ears makes it look a bit odd as well, but I guess they are pinched back behind the scarf

I think that's just the slight disproportionality in the face shape - the image wouldn't have shown ears (definitely under the scarf) but because the artist has tweaked the angle, it looks a little wrong. We humans are very good at noticing when faces aren't quite right ; )

In the end it's all that matters - if it speaks to you, own it display and enjoy it. The message in the work is strong and if it communicates that for you, then it's doing its job!
