Featured Unbelievable charity plate find

couldnt believe my eyes when i found this today
looks like it should be in a museum not a charity shop
large 13 inch size
wall hanging more than a plate i would think
features are in relief
im guessing saint george ?

photos dont even do it justice
and no damage, apart from some gilding wear around the edges

any help on this would be greatly appreciated

However, the beard may make all the difference & St. George may be a good guess for your lovely plate. The art work rings a distant bell, but so far not coming up with it. I'd have grabbed him.

It's awesome Charlie.I don't really know a thing about UK Pottery,but might it be in the same school as 19th (or earlier) Minton ? You might also check the art tile makers.
Looks like something one would have seen in Lord Byron's chamber in Villa Diodati !

 

I think it is Continental European. Maybe German, or even Italian?

If it is Ambiorix, then quite possibly this is Belgian. Those impressed numbers are often seen on continental pottery. Lovely charger -- who put that in a charity shop?

It looks like many Italian Majolica subjects. The execution has similarities to these French plates.

Yeah I'm not sure about that mate either, I'm guessing the middle is mold number

I would like to think the 1786 is a date Mark, but that might be wishful thinking

I have seen old pieces stamped in that odd number style before though, like they've been done 1 number at a time at different levels

The reference above is Portuguese - could Portugal or Spain be a possibility? They have amazing tile making traditions if you're seeing that influence.

Mama Mia. Lovely thingummy. Italian majolica I think perhaps. Or maiolica, as they spell it.

 

Hector has something approaching a dragon on his helmet here...not a common trope but quite a few images of Hector about with leaves as a symbol. Your guy has oak leaves on his helmet - is that a rowan branch on the right? The plants might be a clue since the helmet with dragon seems to be a common-ish device.

 

So it seems a few people walked round with winged beasts on their heads in the 'owden days.
