    Hello

Please help identify and date this jar.
I got it from local flea and it does look more or less old.
Since I have no clue about pottery need help to identify.
Height is about 150mm and diameter about 160mm.

Not sure if that the case, I see bunch of similar all without a lid.

Possibly old but I agree Komokwa that it is missing the lid. It is probably a ginger jar . no purpose for a jar with out a lid other than a vase. Most probably don't have their lid because they were broken or separated over time. Google ginger jar to see. I seem to be having troubles up loading pics the last few days or I would show you mine.

I’ve got several of this type, never found one with a lid though but I often find the blue cracked ice cherry blossom types with a lid.
Could have had a cork stopper perhaps?

definitely had a lid - you can see an 'outline' for the lid.

From a few dollars to millions...depending on a great many variables.

All ginger jars had a lid of some material. Is that a Vietnamese Shipwreck style Jar ? Just a wild first-cup of coffee guess.
    Ditto Komo-'few dollars to a million-variables'.

Here is one with an original lid. Most got discarded and some later ones just had a paper and wax lid.

I dunno why, but these humble Chinese jars really appeal to me. I've found some of the green one in thrifts for a dollar or two.

I have one like the one Very Brad just posted and yes it has no lid. Good to know it might have been wax.

Have always appealed to me as well. The green ones pop up often and I have a couple of them around. Often get pegged to the 20s but I don't know how accurate that is. Could even be post-war by my reckoning.

Often described as “provincial”, made for the average folk out in the country to store food in. I’d guess 1800-1900 somewhere. Probably worth $25-$100 depending where it’s being sold would be my guess.

I was told by someone years ago that you can't really tell the age of these ginger jars because they were made for many years and basically made the same way with the same materials and glazes -- possibly they are still being made in some areas in China.

It was someone who replied to me in a thread about these jars years ago. Questions about them come up every now and then. However, yes, do take with a grain of salt.
