I picked up a graduated wedding cake necklace in a lot last night at auction.

I have had similar ones in the past, but my knowledge of this type of art glass jewelry is not extensive.

unfortunately, I did not get photos of it last evening as I was busy cleaning up and listing another item. And I’m at work now, so I don’t have any photos to share right now.

my question is to those of you who may be more familiar with these beads.

Are there any tell-tale characteristics I should be looking for to determine: age, authenticity, quality, value etc?

I realize these have been produced for quite some time and are still being made today. And like anything else, poorer quality copies are common.

I will upload photos this evening, but in the meantime does anyone have any insight on things to look for?

the beads are light blue with the typical raised & painted wedding cake design, graduated in size. They are strung on a double string (not double strand necklace) and secured with a brass threaded barrel closure. If I recall, the strand is not very long at all, approaching choker length, probably between 16-18”

I think I might have a '40-'50 necklace with those same beads
That might already give a small indication of age
For the rest I m waiting for the experts opinions, just like you :angelic:

Oh wow! The same style beads.

I found one on my necklace that has a point to it, presumably from pulling the rod

So, I saw this necklace for sale for a steal online and I bought it in a whim.
When it arrived (just a cardboard envelope and some tissue) -sigh- one of the beads was broken in half.
Ah well, if you pay peanuts...
Monkeys and jewelry are not a good combo.
I have to restring it anyway, not sure how though: I just realized the beads miss the little white/blue and red dots the other necklace has...:hilarious:

Handmade, so things can differ. It looks sweeter like that, and just as beautiful as the other one.:)

    Any Jewelry,
Indeed, every maker must have had his own style. Indeed it looks sweeter like this.
Just got news I will get all my money back because of the breaking so a Murano necklace for free sweetens a lot

@JewelryPicker Definitely authentic, definitely vintage. I would say quality consistent to what Italy was putting out at that time. Lovely graduated bead necklace with great colors.

Agree with the dating of 1950's (plus or minus a decade).

    Both are beautiful necklaces!

I bought my necklace 52 years ago when I was 12. My parents had a second hand store and all their friends were in the business. One day one of them came over with some stuff and he had this necklace that he said was Venetian glass. I used my babysitting money and paid $8 which was a huge amount of money in 1961 but I fell in love with it. I wore it a lot when I was younger.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Does that style of cap on the glass beads tend to be on older necklaces? I noticed that the others in this thread have different caps, or none at all.
