He’s Pierrot, strictly speaking. Little spill holder.

Awesome-a true Victorian 'Pennywise' clown ! You can see how these vaudeville grotesques gave kids nightmares (tho this chap's a bit more benign).

Yeah the early pearlware stuff is awesome mate, they have a cartooney/folk art look to them

Would love a lion (or two)

That looks to me like a break on the back of yours, like it was snapped off something larger (but I can't imagine what).

Yeah I can't quite work it out either

The internal hole part has a glaze over it so it was done at the time of production

Staffy pieces do usually have small holes on the base to let the air escape when made

So don't know if it's something to do with that

Can you do a close-up of the hole?

you can see a little bit of pottery coming through in the hole, but most of it is glazed over and smooth

doubt part of another piece as its got its own base (like your thinking though)

does look odd and not right but think some factory flaw

But with the angle of the hole, not to mention his size, I'm not sure how he would hold spills/splints/tapers...

That's a very ragged hole. If it was meant to be seen it would be better finished. I stick to the thought that the hole is damage and that something (whether big or small) is missing.
