    Hi folks

something i found today in our local charity shop for not very much

has no mark so probably why it was so cheap

im not mad about it, i find the colours quite garish (ive tried to hide most of the pink roses in the pics as much as possible)

    9 1/2 inches

    super condition

base looks austrian i think, maybe someone trying to copy vienna ?

    any thoughts or info appreciated

Charming. What gives it pizzazz is the scale of the decoration.

I'm thinking it's a plain vase retro decorated by an amateur.

Yeah that thought did cross my mind, I wouldn't say total amateur though there's technique there

We refer to "amateur" porcelain painters here but... Important to remember that many of these were married gentlewomen who, because of their status and class, weren't allowed to work because of marriage bars which continued in the U.S. into the 1960s. This meant that many creative women had no professional outlet for their talents. The term "amateur" should in no way negate their (considerable) abilities.

There's no putdown intended. A professional only does things for money. An amateur does it for the love of it.

Also it is difficult to see the quality of the art from the photos.

Nah, no put down taken, that's a nice insight

As deb said the fullness of the decoration is quite interesting and odd

It's got like a caged effect

What a pretty thing ! Ive mentioned this before, but I lived in St. Pete Fl at one point and about 2 blocks away was a china painting club. They would have sales and you could pick up gorgeous things for nothing. Some of those old dears were incredibly talented.

"Old dears"? Sure it wasn't intended but... the expression is ageist.
