Featured Czech? Vintage or antique? TYIA

Hi all,
I thought these might have been antique but not really old. I was asked about them the other night and after I showed them, the lady scoffed and said no thank you, they are only vintage. She sounded like she hadn’t had her 2nd cup of coffee or needed a coupon for Midol! Lol

I think they are lovely. I like the cut of the glass and the color. The clasp is marked sterling. They have a really nice weight to them. They are approx 17”

Any help is very much appreciated.

 

Well the ring clasp was invented in early 1900. 1923 would make them antique so possible. I am not knowledgeable enough to identify the beads, however they certainly look like they have some age.

 

Between the wars I’d think, so nigh on antique.

I have a similar necklace that was my mother's (born in 1912), with graduated beads cut like yours, but clear. It's also quite heavy. She called the necklace rock crystal. She wore it when she was a young woman (probably in the early 1930s) but it's possible it could have belonged to her Mother or an older sister. I don't know if the beads are actually rock crystal (a mineral) or lead crystal (glass with lead oxide).

I really like the color of your necklace. Since you said it's heavy, I wonder if it's dyed rock crystal or lead crystal glass. Do you have a gem tester?

 

I put it on the tester as I thought it might be other than glass. It’s glass! @Ownedbybear Hiw can I learn to tell the age like you? Is there something specific that you see on this necklace? Thank you. I want to learn.

so......study the time period, look at the clasp, the way it's threaded, and the cut of the material used.....and look at hundreds of necklaces until you get board....& that's about the time you'll say. " Oh, ya...I've seen that look before "....

I rarely find it. I’m afraid to look through other people’s posts because they label stuff wrong

 

Don't be afraid ....& don't look at all the labels.
Look at the items.....until you get a feel for similarities that train your eye as to what to look for.

Ya.....it's work.....but it'll pay off !

Some of it is simply having seen a lot.

Having said that, the clasp is between the wars, the length is right for then, as is the overall style, it goes with the clothes. That colour and cut was fashionable too. It’s a nice thing.

 

ITA - a lot of costume jewelry info comes from plain old experience. How do I know that? Because I'm old and know stuff.

To me that color says 1930s; the yellow/gold/orange glass was white-hot popular in the USA in the early to mid 1930s.

A huge part of jewelry era identification for me is the style of a piece. Also the materials used and the colors. (Much of this mentioned above.) Unlike most folks, I never paid any attention to clasps. For me it was just the style of the era. A bit like clothing... what was being worn stylistically, or what colors -- you can often instantly pinpoint a decade with clothing, and jewelry is a bit like that.

Your glass necklace is gorgeous. I was thinking 30s/early 40s. I had a clear necklace like that once and it was really something in person. A definitely cut above. A nicer piece for sure!

 

Clasps aren’t definitive and I do get irritated when people on Facebook fora state things like, oh, it must be old, it’s a C clasp. Arg. Still used! But the entirety of a thing is the consideration.

And yes, clothing. Thinking about what the piece would have been worn with.

 

I think clasps can be tricky because they can be change throughout the life of something. If I think it’s original I will try to identify the possible age of the closure or whatever but I don’t make my sole opinion on just that. Some era styles just stand out and others… Sometimes it just pops right in my head what era it likely is. The Czech stuff I am really just starting to learn and can sometimes ID it before I ask. I just like to confirm with you wonderful people in here. I do agree the quality of this piece is a cut above. The weight and quality of glass seem to be a little nicer than just run of the mill. The color in person is amazing. Hard to even describe.
