When I got this, 25 years ago, it was with another conical hat. All similarities stopped at that; this showed high skill & careful repeated effort...the other was a piece of patently obvious tourist junk...both were priced the same: $3. The other one was still on the shelf months later, when the store closed.
It's 18" in diameter, 5" deep; the interior ring is ~5" inside diameter, an' it weighs ~6 oz.
When I was an ignorant youth, I would have called it a coolie hat; my thought now is that it (and many others very much similar) were/are used widely throughout a large Asian area by folks working in the planting, production an' harvesting of rice, under a blistering sun in Laos, Cambodia, Viet Nam, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia an' the Philippines.
Each of those nations is composed of many ethnic groups, an' I'm pretty sure those each have distinctive patterns, methods & materials used in creating their sun-shades.
The small blue center of the star looks like cotton fabric, which may help...but it may be severely sun-bleached. Can any of you identify a region and/or group from these pics? I'll be most grateful for all your comments an' observations. Thanks for lookin'!

I had one of those in my garage sale. It always rains for my sale. My friend got caught with out an umbrella to get back to her car and she just had her hair done. I gave her that hat and not a drop of water got on her!

Death Valley has amazing hiking in the side canyons, but I wouldn't recommend hiking across the valley itself. ;);):dead::dead:

Hiking ? Isnt that the thing where you are in an air conditioned club car having a vodka tonic as you look out at the scenery ? :)

In my case, hold the gin. Add extra lime.

A lot of rice I buy here in Canada is grown in Texas.

Wow! You learn something new every day. I wouldn't have thought they would have picked such a dry climate to grow it in. I actually had to Google that just to check you weren't pulling my chain

Parts of Texas are flat-out swamp, so I can see rice cultivation. Western Texas is the dust bowl.
