Is this a real antique painting on board or some kind of really good fake?

The backing board is definitely not 1840's. The coloring of the wood is far too light. If the rest is antique, the backer could have been replaced more recently. Often, the antique backers become brittle and fail over time.

I would be damned. The backboard is original too. It was just reverse side at some point so the wood doesn’t look aged. The other side is definitely matching the color age of rest of frame.

Oil painting is on some kind of tin /steel sheet That makes sense of the thinness of it. B0BB4D6C-FFC1-4CC8-A458-F881EFC6F721.jpeg B0BB4D6C-FFC1-4CC8-A458-F881EFC6F721.jpeg 4D90599D-0ACA-4BCE-89C0-B468D822B567.jpeg

    That's cool!
Can we see some more close ups of the painting now? Including the edges?

You can test for steel by using a magnet.

I asked about the size because it might be a copper plate. There has been a limited tradition of painting on copper, though I would not expect it to be common in the 19th century. A small size would make this possibility a little more likely.

I think you are going to have to find an expert on Gorbitz to see if anyone has documented his technique.

Great result Kaiser, but unless I'm mistaken that looks more like canvas board. Can you post more pictures front and side please so we might have a better look.

He painted on board and also painted paper on board so it realistically either of these ,it's definitely not canvas as no stretchers.

@Kaiserpoo says it is on some type of metal - unless there is another layer he is not telling us about.

I imagine we could be looking at dropped and dented tin when the backing board was first removed, from the wrinkle on the front.

(Komo, I pretty much gave up asking "HOW BIG IS IT?":D)

Then indeed, I imagine we could be looking at dropped and dented tin when the backing board was first removed, from the wrinkle on the front.
    Would this be correct, Kaiserpoo?
