How to clean oddly stained 14K gold chain?

I have been buying/selling for years and cleaning my stock myself. I got a gold chain that has some darker links near where it would touch the sides of the back of neck. Tried dip, toothpaste, ammonia/water, no change. Had it professionally cleaned for a fee in an ultrasonic and it improved slightly. Still not normal. Jeweler thought maybe someone had soldered/worked on the piece after it had come in contact with a chemical or cologne.

The darker links are in center row and center area of lower row.Any suggestions? And can you tell me name of the link? A loose Byzantine??

And, is there a way to re-activate daily updates of the antiquers.com postings? I miss them and often go weeks without reminding myself to sign in. Thank you! 14K_Fancy_link_chain.JPG

Did you try a sunshine cloth?

Follow and receive emails on a popular post, such as the finds thread. They will pop up often and you can go on from there! (Sorry I can't help with your gold problem though!)

That’s a very strange way to clean discolored gold

I agree with your jeweler that it looks like some sort of chemical discolouration, although I don't know about soldering (heat induced).

14k gold is an alloy of several metals, 58.5% gold with copper and another metal, usually silver, mixed in.
It looks like one of the non-gold metals reacted to a chemical. So that is the metal you have to treat. If you have a larger area of gold, like a ring or a pendant, professional buffing is usually best. But in this case there are thin twisted wires, which can't be buffed.

A sunshine cloth, like @Ownedbybear suggested, can be used to clean any metal, so that is always worth a try.
Other things you can try are silver polish or copper polish, because the discolouration could be related to the silver or copper in the alloy.
Byzantine or king chain. The same as a Byzantine/king chain without the spacer rings.

Thanks to @Any Jewelry ! I tried a polish cloth before and after the ultrasonic cleaning; same with silver polish. No change. Maybe it's the copper in the gold? I may have to live with it.

I appreciate your ID'ing the link as Byzantine--this one is a bit more "airy" and relaxed.

You could still try copper polish, although silver polish usually works on copper as well. But you never know...

I may have to purchase some copper cleaner. Seems I've run the gamut of alternatives. Thanks!
