Looks like about the same skill level WC & the signature's somewhat reminiscent. The signature on Charlie's sketch is slightly italicized rt slant,'Y's different,'D's similar though.
Charlie's could be a more casual sketch version & the illustration a more formal signing for publication.

What else can we read into this seemingly innocuous domestic scene...perhaps an interesting 'backstory'...a young Mrs. Hudson before she became Sherlock Holmes landlady at 221 B Baker St. while simultaneously being Prof. Moriarty's mistress, albeit a 'double-agent' ?...and what's in Stracci's unseen foot warmer-nitroglycerine ?...Please don't get a foot cramp Mrs. B.

Or she is short like me and has to put her feet up to keep her lap level.

Just so unusual that May Dixon with such a talent and yet so little information about her.Would love to know why she did not produce more work for such a talented artist.Or am I missing something?!!!!!1

There's also so much superb unsigned art out there. The quality level of a century ago was so much higher-almost everybody sketched & practiced water color painting or did needle point -especially the more well bred young women.
Imagine a world where kids created art instead of gaming ?

According to familysearch, Emma May Dixon of Mulberry Green Harlow was born in 1875, described in the 1891 census as "Artist Watercolour". Same address as the plain "May Dixon" who won the prizes in the Studio Magazine in 1896, so apparently the same person, though her older sister Mary E Dixon, b.1870, is described as "Governess and Art Teacher".

Bev aka thelmasstuff Colored pencil artist extraordinaire ;)

Without seeing the entire back of the canvas & how it's applied to the board, it's hard to tell how old it is. My guess is it's a 20th century repro done of one of May Dixon's original paintings and the signature is included but isn't really hers. I don't see the same quality.

Frankly, I don't see a resemblance between May Dixon's work and this watercolour, other than the period.
Exactly the way I'm sitting right now, my feet on an antique milking stool. She must be our size.:playful:

Pearls, speaking as another one of the vertically challenged, here is my way of handling the problem. Stand under the wanted item wearing expression of combined longing and frustration. Wait until someone tall enough comes by, and then say to him/her, "I am so sorry, but would you be so kind as to grab that (whatsit) for me? Darn it! God just shortchanged me when it came to arm length."

Ignore the humiliation and embarrasment you may feel, and as my mother would say, "Offer it up."

Thanks silver. I actually do that but I have to be lucky enough to have someone actually walking down the aisle to assist me.

Not fully convinced that the watercolour is not by May Dixon. Her use of the light from the candle suggests an accomplished artist.Possibly by her at a younger age, late teens, and maybe just maybe the girl in the picture could be her older sister early 20s.Might just add up.

The published illustration is a lithograph, and would have been copied from Dixon's original by a professional lithographer. Given that, I think the style is perfectly consistent.

Thanks for all the info and comments everyone

I've grown quite fond of it

Definitely deserves to be framed at least

Trying to work out what frame would be best

Haven't been very vocal recently, picked up a nasty bug, that will not shift

Been 3 months now, just keeps coming back
