Does anybody know how to tell if this is genuine. I found it in suitcase during a house clearance, the case was marked up ‘WW2 trench coat’. Also, is it English or? Thanks a lot in advance. 1880DF54-3372-41E7-9019-FDC4108CCB2F.jpeg 7B6C2F0E-81E3-4551-A472-21BD8A5A5F0C.jpeg

It is a man's coat because of the way it buttons. I would say military style but I am real knowledgeable. I would say a military coat would have a label with military indications and brass buttons and this has neither. Is there a label down along the inside seam lower in the coat or even in the pocket?

I have the same questions as Lark. Also, what's going on with the sleeves? I can't quite make it out... are/were there cuffs? Buttoned sleeve tabs at the wrist area? You show a photo of a buckle... where is that from?

Looks like the cuffs are shown down instead of up.

Hopefully the picture I attarched to Larks reply helps. The buckle is from a belt that goes around the waist. The cuffs are down, which is my bad. They have no buttons or anything when turned up correctly.

I assume those aren't the original buttons? And it's a greatcoat, not a trench coat. (You can use the classic Burberry raincoat as a example of the later.)

Numbers on the label possibly indicate a date:
    20.2.42 for 20th February, 1942
I can't quite make out the name because of the way you're holding the label...
    Capt. D.J. All_rdice?
I agree that it's not a trench coat.

Allardice. Lots of fighting men by that name. Don't think military regulation.

I couldn't tell if it was Allardice or Allerdice. :)

It's a beautiful piece of clothing, but it's an overcoat / greatcoat. Not a trenchcoat.

A trenchcoat is made of waterproof gaberdine cotton, designed to protect against the rain, and not wool, to protect against the cold, which is what this is made of.

This is a trenchcoat. As you can see, it's a much lighter-weight garment, and usually - khaki/tan coloured. They're also common in black, and navy blue.

I have a navy blue one which I wear in wintertime. It's great for when you need something to keep warm without dragging a heavy woolen coat with you everywhere you go.
