I've been to the car boot this morning and filled my bag.

I found some brass items on one stall. A brass plate depicting cherubs and couple of chinoiserie brass vases.

The plate is 17cm in diameter. I was quite chuffed with it at first. On closer inspection I have noticed both flaws from casting and marks from turning on a lathe. I'm guessing that it is a casting of an older turned plate and to pick up the detail it has it would probably have been cast in a silicone mold, making it 1960s onwards. Is there anything they don't copy nowadays?

The slim vase I believe to be chinese and c. 1940s. The rounder vase is quite clearly a modern repro but I am a sucker for anything with a Chinese or Japanese mark on it.

Edit: Just looked the crane vase up and that looks like an Ali Express special too. I think I'm steering away from brass in future.

The brass plate could be an underplate for a Cellini style jug.

Ah so the rim of the jugs foot would sit in the trough round the edge of the plate.

Yes. If you google Cellini you will probably see a few.
It looks fine on its own, but if you know the style you know there is something missing.

Yes I've had a look already. There wouldn't be a trough round the edge like that if it didnt have a purpose. It is quite pronounced.

Maybe go back to the car boot and see if they have the matching jug?

I think Chinoiserie's is a bit more recent, but that sketch-like decoration is also on Chinese brass items my grandmother was given in the early 1910s.

So Chinois-Do you think the Cellini motif cherub plate is 19th or late 20th century ? I guess anything's possible considering modern Chinese craftsmanship and desire to recreate anything ever possibly created worth more than buck-check yr Pyrex !

Judging by the wear on the base, I'd say first half of the 20th century. These were generally European made.

Well it appears to have turning marks from a lathe and also flaws from casting. So it would seem that it is a casting made from an original that was turned on a lathe. I'm thinking that it maybe required a silicone mold to pick up such detail as the lathe turnings which would make it latter half of 20th century. Unless there is some casting technique used prior to this that could produce such quality. I was wondering if anyone had any more knowledge on this.

You can cast brass and then use a lathe to finish the base. Happens quite a lot.

I guess the most accurate 19th century replicas were made by the process of 'Electrotype' (Elkington & Co.). They've got some of these facsimiles in the Brit Museum.Of course skilled jewelers still use lost wax to create beautiful castings albeit w/ much finish work.

Okay thanks guys. So it could be older than I thought. Cool.

The central medallion on the plate follows a design seen on engraved gems known as Tre Genii or, alternatively, La Gloria. My reference book says the original is a bas relief by Thorvaldsen.
