Picked this up at a garage sale for three bucks because I need a door stop and it has a nice copper form. What was its original use?
It's 3.5" in diameter, 6" tall and weights 8.5 lbs
The iron fits perfectly inside the copper but I don't see where it was attached. The iron has evidence of nickel plating but it's mostly gone. The iron has a metal band attached to a small wooden stick and the ends of the band are bend over a 'bridge' in a groove.
The small ring at the top of the copper doesn't look sturdy enough to hold the weight and shows no wear.
    Is it a clock weight? ResizeCopperForm1.jpg ResizeCopperIronBottomCloseUp.jpg ResizeCopperFormWithIronRuller.jpg ResizeCopperFromWithIronBottom.jpg

Are you sure the insert is "iron?" Is it magnetic?

I think what you've got is a mould form for some kind of food - jelly, aspic or such?

Nothing to do with a clock that I can see.

I'll third the food mould/mold. Imagine a nice 6" jiggly jello in that shape :).

I've never seen a mold with that loop at the top. What's the function of the iron insert?

Many molds have loops at the top or side to display them.
JMHO, but yours is quite ornate which I think is good.

I think it is possible that the insert is intended to hold the shape of the mold.

Chocolate or sugar, I think. Something that solidifies and holds it shape even when thin-walled.

Mom had a gorgeous copper antique mold of a beaver with a gorgeous patina......... until a cleaning woman, who thought she was doing a good thing whilst we weren't around, polished it up all Bright & Shiny!!!!!!!!! EEEEEEEEEKKKK!!!

I believe it is a counterweight for a hanging kerosene/oil lamp. Some had clockwork "motors," but others had counterweights to raise and lower the height of the lamp, to fill the font, and trim or light the wick. Most that I have seen did not weigh quite that much, but I've had one that weighed a little more. The size and decorations are consistent with a lamp counterweight also.

    Does anybody here cook ?
if you make a jelly you use a mold and fill it , you don't attempt to fit another "mold" into the first no.gif
and for chocolate, you line the mold with a layer of choccy and drain the rest out, to make a shell.

most molds are metal but not 8lbs !!

    I'd go for a chandelier counterweight ( for dusting ) dust.gif
