I am looking for any information on a large Chinese scroll, which I bought at auction (in England) some years ago. I have kept it rolled up and I think it is time to move it on, but realise I don't know anything about it. It is about six feet long and about 30 inches high, and the first photo shows it laid out on a single bed, which it just covers. It shows a mountain landscape with a river. There is a large signature in one corner and something else, perhaps a title. I apologise for the quality of the photos, I took some quick snaps before taking it around to a friend who said he would contact a friend of his who is an expert on Chinese items, but that hasn't happened and now he has misplaced it. I thought when I bought it that it was just a modern tourist item but quite an attractive scene, but now I have looked it up online I can't find anything as large or the same style, so I really would like to know more. Any thoughts appreciated. Chinese scroll - 1.jpeg Chinese scroll - 2.jpeg Chinese scroll - 3.jpeg Chinese scroll - 4.jpeg Chinese scroll - 5.jpeg

Thanks for your thoughts on the misplacing of the scroll, but has anyone actually got any thoughts on the scroll itself? I am really keen to get an idea of its date, whether it is unusual or fairly common, the quality of the painting, and whether it has much value. Or perhaps anywhere else, like another specialist website, I might try to find an expert opinion? I have had very helpful replies to previous posts in the past from antiquers, but it seems this scroll is proving to be rather obscure.

    well, let's see here.......

it hasn't been up for 24 hour yet....
    is it paper or fabric?
I think it's the largest I've ever seen here
    it's a holiday weekend ......
we don't normally do values here.......................................... with exceptions!
    I'm not even sure it qualifies as a ' scroll ' ....

Please, if we're not being fast enuf....or smart enuf for you at the present then by all means look elsewhere for that elusive answer you seek !!

    Happy Easter....... Happy Passover............

Sorry, didn't mean to rush anyone, it's just that my past experience shows that if something doesn't receive comments very quickly it slips down the list and is quickly forgotten. I hope everyone is enjoying their Easter/Passover away from their computers, which is how it should be!
It is made to roll up, with a baton (I think) attached to each end, one with ribbons to tie up the bundle. As far as I can remember it is on a thick paper.
I put it on a Facebook page for Chinese artifacts where it gathered some likes but no actual information, so I'm beginning to wonder where to turn. I'm not expecting a valuation, just a general idea of whether it is worth something more than just a decorative value. When I get it back I will take a close up of the signature, maybe the seal mark will mean something to someone. I will also lay it out on the floor and climb a step ladder to take a photo, so you can see it in all its glory. I wish I had a suitable place to display it rather than keep it rolled up.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I can't help, but will bump it up by commenting. Too bad you don't have a picture of the entire thing flat, in one photo. The waviness of the paper, then, may be due to it having been rolled up, and unrolled? I hope you get it back, soon.

Thank you for bumping it up, it was probably a mistake to post it over the Easter holiday! The top photo shows most of the entire thing, laid out over a single bed, although from a rather awkward angle. The waviness is due to the rolling, but also to the lumpiness of the quilt! Probably an unknown and recent artist. I think it would straighten out if displayed. The other photos show the detail, style and signature, so I suspect if it hasn't been recognised by now it isn't easy to identify. I've had another look for it online, haven't found the same style anywhere, although some other mountain scenes, but not in this fairly impressionistic style or colour scheme. One thing which might be helpful would be a close-up of the signature showing the text to the left and the cartouche, which might be a clue to someone with knowledge. Maybe a photo of the edges and fastenings might help. I will try hard to get it back from the friend and have another go, at least you might get an idea of skill (or lack of it, I'm no judge, I just like it!) Thanks again.

Not my area of expertise so take what I have to say with a grain of salt. My experience, having seen several large panoramic paintings such as this, is that their value is more decorative than truly valuable. I am sure there are exceptions but I do not see the kind of quality I would expect from a tuly fine example. Given the creasing and crumpling seen, the value is probably further negated.

Anecdotally, some friends of mine received a similar sized painting from a Korean friend. Their framer told them that the frame would exceed the value of the art. They went ahead and had it done, costing several hundred dollars. It looked spectacular over their fireplace.

This one sold for an opening bid of $20.00 vs. $200-400 estimate. It is 55" long.

In fairness, some do seem to bring good money. Here are several thousand to view. To see prices, sign up for a free account.

Thank you verybrad for your very informative reply. It was a bit what I was expecting although not what I was hoping! It seems that the artist is probably not so important, it's more a matter of whether someone likes the painting enough to frame or mount it for display. I confess I bought it with an opening bid at auction! I still haven't found one with the same colour palette, most mountain paintings seem to be monochrome or a bit garish, I think the colours of mine are more attractive, but perhaps that is just my western taste. If it wasn't so large and difficult to post I could just put it on ebay and see if anyone else really likes it, but as it is I think I will have to search for an antique shop somewhere, and they are not easy to find around here! I think it would look great properly displayed.

Thank you for this link, it looks like a good specialist site. When I have the scroll back I will take better photos and try on that site, and also report here. Thanks for your help.
