Old 29 Opal Brooch Value

My niece is selling a bunch of jewelry that belonged to her Monther in Law. There was an estate sale on these items many years ago. These did not sell at that time. So, I was wondering if I could get some help to determine if these pieces are still worth what they were tagged for, if they lost value or they have increased in value.

 

start with the weight of the gold , and go from there.....

 

From the photo I think I can see maker's initials above the "14K" mark. Might be able to locate a comparable piece if the maker is known at all.

Good to have a baseline weight of the whole thing. It's always hard to calculate what is gold and what is stones, but you'd get a rough idea.

There are a few people who know opals here, no idea if these would have more value in weight than gold, I think it depends on the opal! Seems like a nice brooch.

 

Yep - start with the gold weight. My formula for online prices was 2x gold weight, designer name (if present) plus whatever the design was worth.

 

Looks like CMJ to me. 14k is quite legible.

Here is a 14K opal brooch on Worthpoint (different design) might have the same CMJ mmaker's mark. Your niece's brooch looks like there is more gold weight in her pin.

Definitely weigh the gold as a starting point as suggested, but here is maybe another from the same maker.
