Contrary Bosko is always nattering at me ! I sometimes catch a glimpse of him in a window but then he's gone in a flash. He's a damned imp-but at least has a sense of humor.

The reddish tones are making me think agate again.
But the crackly surface is interesting.

Yeah, he's like Boo Radley, you always hear weird rumors about him, but never see him!

What a great book & movie-Robert Duvall as Boo had one line. He's 92 now,and the first time most folks really noticed him was probably in the Twilight Zone.

Is the theme here BR? Brown Rocks, Boo Radley, Bosko ____

The distinctive heaviness of the stone disinclines me to any quartz identification.

    Doesn’t everyone have one?
There just would be  Gemstones are soooo fickle
She’s full of attitude and gets sworn at frequently. Slightly like having a moody teenager in the house.

    I did wonder about that.
Apache tears was suggested on a FB page but then discounted due to something on the last photo that shouldn’t be there, probably the yellow and red AJ mentioned.

Natural Sardonyx was another suggestion on FB.

That's a possible. The stone is often layered in those colors.

Sard is dark brown chalcedony. Sardonyx is banded agate with alternating sard & white layers. If these are any kind of quartz, sard, which is a color, not a separate mineral, comes closest. Wonder to what extent the red cord affects how they look when a light is shone through. A streak test might also be interesting.

I did wonder about that too. They need restringing so I may cut them apart to see if that makes a difference.

As in, on a white tile?

Unglazed white tile. It has been suggested in these pages that, if you have no other surface to use, the underside of a toilet tank lid can serve. According to my mineral guide, hematite leaves a "blood-red" streak. Same book says the streak for chalcedony is white, but does not say whether colors such as sard, cornelian & chrysoprase leave a streak in their respective colors.

Just because we love to do it, has UV light been tried.

    This puzzles me greatly:
