Any suggestions on origin and age? About 4 3/4" tall.
    Thanks

    It's a modern (post 1950) reproduction of a circa 1725 "onion" bottle.
This piece was made using traditional methods. The non authentic color and fired/smoothed pontil are the main clues.

    The real thing.

    Thanks.
So, being in this size, I guess, not even a reproduction but more like an art glass piece.

    Hi Skeezix,
You posting that photo has brought me such sadness and joy. The Philadelphia dug for I-95 and me finding 8 to 10 of those bottles and hundreds of pieces. Oh those were the good old days.

    Yes they were.
Friends of mine dug 11 English onions in one well hole, including one with a seal dated 1714. In the very bottom of the hole, on the dirt, a PAIR of ear rings was found mounted with Dutch gold coins dated 1694 and 1697.

I found a lot of cool colonial period stuff but that was the dig that was the talk of the town. Unfortunately I missed that one. It was cool just getting to handle the stuff from that dig.

Greg, I've dug colonial period artifacts in Burlington NJ too ;).

    Diggin' is the BEST!

Kard. They made little ones too. The smaller ones are VERY rare but they did make 'em.

I once had 5 tiny 18th. century onion type bottles. None over 2" tall. (VERY VERY rare size) they were found in a leather pouch on the bank of a nearby creek. Probably a doctor's kit. The pouch deteriorated to nothing. The bottles brought over $3000.

(I didn't find 'em. I bought 'em from the finder.)

    Hi Skeezix,
I tried to find old dumps around here to dig but they all have 3-4 million dollar houses built on them.:arghh: One old guy told me about a dump, I went and started to dig there but it was only opened in 1940s and closed in the 70s. What surprised me was there were paper bags with oyster shells in them and beer bottles. Also found banana peels!!!! I thought all of this stuff should have rotted away. Paper bags and banana peels who knew??? I mean I expected leather shoes and metal and such but never ever expected paper bags and banana peels. The neatest thing I ever found was a human skull. I was digging in a trench for bottles in the 1960s and this skull fell out of the wall of dirt. I jumped a few feet and then looked at it closely. It was all wired together including the jaw bones. I called the local police and they agreed that it was an old anatomical specimen. Dug all around but no more bones showed themselves. I sold the skull for 125 bucks at a yard sale.

We dug a 15" ivory dildo out of a circa 1825 bordello privy in Philly. Bordello privy? Lots of perfume/scent/cosmetics containers and liquor bottles...and a dildo.
I think it's in a museum somewhere today.
