Featured Wild boar engraving

hi all

i picked this up for very cheap, a pound odd in a charity shop. might be nothing.
has a nice maple frame, so worth that anyway

cant seem to find the image anywhere, lots of wild boars, but not this one
hopefully someone might be able to find the engraver

the paper used looks pretty old, but no marks or names

Terrific find, Charlie! It does seem to be the Dujardin composition, but reversed and without the sketchy background.

This is laid paper. If you hold the paper up to a light, does it look like this?


I don't know about authorship. Because the image is reversed, it may be a copy of the Dujardin, but that could be by himself, or a student, or a follower.

If it is on laid paper, it certainly supports the idea of being contemporary with the Dujardin.

Really a good find.

I just don't see the sig in the upper left (right-reversed) corner.Can you see it faintly up there-plates do get worn over time.It definitely does look old to me.

Don't think so mate, the marks you can't see are like a faint background in black

 

I see them faint etch marks in yr closeups,perhaps hold up to a strong light to look for light embossing (a manufacturer's signet).

 

It doesn't look like laid paper to me, and that's bad news. You need to show it to someone who knows, hands on. Wove paper (no lines) wasn't introduced until mid-18th C. If this is wove paper, it can't be by Dujardin: it has to be a later copy - late 18th C or even 19th C.

I really expected it to be laid paper.

A Swiss engraver named Samuel Granicher (1758-1813)

I'm not finding a description of any Samuel Granicher print that specifies the type of paper used, but given the time frame, it's likely he used both.
