Featured Old ring

This ring looks as if the glass bead is c1920/30 foil like my grandmothers necklace- would I be correct?. Most of the gilt has worn off and just a simple style but I love knowing approx dates and how you have come to that conclusion. When did these foil beads appear?

Foil beads with the foil in between layers of glass were already made over 2000 yrs ago. But am I right in thinking this is foil on the outside?

 

I haven’t got it with me to check how deeply set the foil is- does that age it at all?. It’s not on the outside.

Yes, foil beads are still made. But if that foil look is painted on the exterior, positively newer.

Even if the foil is inside, the design of this ring looks more 1960s or later. You asked why we come to a conclusion on date--excellent question. This is an opinion of course, but stylistically the way the metal is done does not look like a 1920s or 30s piece. Of course might be exceptions, but back then things had a bit more craft and work in the setting, stone set with prongs, that kind of thing.

If you google "1920s ring" (or "1930s ring") you will find a very different look. (But warning, easy to get caught up looking, pretty nice rings pop up.)

I just bought a silver wire-wrap bead ring two years ago on a vacation trip to Florida!

 

No idea on the bead,but the ring looks like mid 70's during a wire wrap craze.

 

Agreed. We started using the square silver or gold wire in the late 1970s.
