I have had for a while but not finding anything. It is a 4 1/2 inch silver mug with half pint R and the number I can't make out either 37 or 87 or something on the front. And on the bottom it has Henry Turner... Paddington which I think?? is in the town in the UK. Or is it his last name? It as warranted hard soldered A 9 62. Has anyone ever heard of Henry Turner or does anyone any info. would be great. qxNOzqW8h2aqzbIXRQHFEA-smallw.jpg 3Ptndu3agLhoYVLpVXihIA-smallw.jpg DfkoEXFQAl1Sh1uAl3wpzg-smallw.jpg T-bn7yJWl3IXtbDVwSNWOA-smallw.jpg

Thanks hozhed that sure looks like that could be him. Do you think think this could have any silver or just silver plated?

Silver plated tankard, maybe hotel ware.
It looks heavily plated probably onto pewter.

It could be plated steel maybe? Or copper? Easy way to find out if its steel,.........see if a magnet sticks to it. Those stampings are pretty deep, and it all looks like silver to me, but I don't know a lot about this type of piece. its a nice looking unit for sure.

Can you show a photo of the weights and measures mark, which may help with dating the piece?

Hey rhiwfield I'm not sure what you mean weights and measures mark? I show all marks that is on it. And SBSVC thanks for the ebay picture do you think this is nickel? That's want they say theirs is. Now I'm really confused nickel or silver plated. I will have to find it again, I think my wife has packed it up again  I really wish she would stay out of my junk room. LOL

I can't see from the photo but you mention an R and 37. The tankard would probably have had a weights and measures mark consisting of a crown, a monarch's initials eg VR for Victoria and an assay district (37 would be Sheffield). It may be that the mark is too worn to tell but it sounds as if you have a partial mark

Yeah maybe the V is worn off. Do you think the one on ebay that SBSVC posted is nickel? If it is... so mine is nickel. Do you think they may of had it wrong?

And do you think it dates to 1837?

Nickel is also attracted to a magnet, it is not as strong as iron but a magnet test will tell you if it is.
It looks silver plated to me rather than nickel plated.
Most of these Victorian tankards were plated Pewter or Britannia metal.

No way. The "hard soldered" speaks to me of 20th century manufacture - post-WWI into the middle.

Thanks daveydempsey for your reply I will test it with a magnet. AS soon as I find it. And let you guys know. Do you think it dates to the early 1800's

The stamp on the Ebay one shows that it was inspected for capacity in Sheffield (37) and that it was Victorian. I dont think that there is information to suggest a date of 1837. Equally on yours there are no silver assay stamps so it will be a form of base metal.
