Possible it is initials only, written as linked cursive.

I have no idea what this is & would have liked to examine in person, but threw in my max & alas, got sniped. It looks, at first glance, like a cameo. Seller does not try to say what it really is. Trompe l'oeil painting?

Filthy sniper! I want to know what it is!

Maybe someone you know got it and eventually will share with you. *fingers crossed*

@Bronwen, I was watching that one, too, but didn't place a bid.

(I'm also guilty of sniping auctions. :))

Sometimes, with articles like this, I start to worry I'm having a stroke as I'm reading. "These words make no sense in this order, wtf?":p

:hilarious: I particularly enjoyed the words "far preferable to the badly designed heads which are sold as common cameos" and "much superior, in correctness of drawing, to many of the staring red and white likenesses" worn by affectionate mammas and devoted spouses:joyful:;):hilarious::hilarious:

I snipe too, in the sense of putting in a bid in the final seconds. But when I put in a bid well above current bid with 4 seconds to go & get topped at 2 seconds to go by someone who has not bid before, I have to think it was automated service, which somehow feels not cricket to me. But if they set a max higher than mine, guess it doesn't matter.

Stodel is quite a high end outfit. See this actually says 'Hygieia', in addition to the signature. Probably never know who the bespectacled lady was.

How cool! And completely unknown to me until now. Well worth knowing about. A deep bow to Ms. Jivvy.

Should add this to the new thread on things you regret not buying. First regret is not following up on good readings by @kyratango & @Jivvy ahead of auction end. Definitely would have bid more. Competitor may have known just what they were looking at & be gloating today over find they would have been willing to pay much more for, so might still have lost, but could have seen to it seller got better compensation. The subtlety of execution of the portrait is greater than on the goddess.
