I have this vase sat on a shelf waiting for me to make a final decision on it. Does it stay or does it go?

I'm pretty sure it is a 60s Woolworthy piece. However, I am quite happy to be proven wrong

It has a nasty chip on the rim.

Does "has to go" mean trash -- or sale?

It's pretty. Put it on a shelf just above your eye level, with the chip to the rear. Or, fill it with cattails (chip to rear), and put it any old where. :)

If it is worthless, then I'll put it back into a charity shop to save my shelf space for something else. I'm not sure if I like it, so wouldn't want to waste space I could be filling with something I am sure I like. If it turned out to be valuable, I'm sure I'd find more hidden beauty in it.

Thanks for the suggestions for displaying it. Up high seems like a good idea.

It has charm, but to my eye the painting doesn't look refined enough for there to be much value. If nothing else, the bird's foremost wing looks odd, like it's missing detail? Or maybe I'm not understanding what I'm seeing?

You are right. The unerside of the bird and underside of his wing just seem like one big splurge of paint. It's also glossy whereas the rest of the vase isnt. No detail there, whereas the rest has some detail. Maybe someone tried to repair some damage to the paint.

No marks, I take it? I would guess unmarked Nippon.

I'd have guessed Chinese. It doesn't look like it's been around more than 30 years or so. If you don't love it, don't cry too much about letting them sell it again.

Ah, you're probably right that someone painted it.

Hi, your vase is indeed Japanese, ca. 1900-1930. It is not rare and with the chip and the repair not worth very much...

Thanks Mat. Ah well, at least it is nearly 100 years old, so I can imagine who has owned it and how many shelves it has been on over the years :)

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Wow, that wing really has no "anything" to it, compared to the rest of the vase, which is quite pretty and detailed!
