yes. We started of collecting Linthorpe and ended up with Christopher Dresser pieces. His designs are well documented, so you can buy pieces which are known designs by him across all fields, glass, pottery metalwork etc; they are not necessarily signed with his signature. I believe, he did not physically work at some of the places manufacturing his designs, he just had to send the designs off to the manufacturer. When Henry Tooth left Linthorpe for Bretby, he took some of the design books with him. We visited the Bretby pottery many years ago and were surprised to see Linthorpe design books in their little museum. As long as they are known designs by him and by the firm he submitted the design to, pieces can be attributed to him.

I believe Linthorpe and Bretby did dimpled vases, probably other factories as well.[IMG]

If you google Christopher Dresser designs, just click on images and you will see a whole range of his work.

My MIL lived in Linthorpe for 60 years (Middlesbrough)We often went into the Linthorpe museum. I am going back 30 years now. The museum said the pattern books from the pottery were lost. We found they were not lost, they were nicked by Tooth when he left Linthorpe for Bretby.

Have to add bought in France fairly recently. No pottery mark on base. Terracotta. I have found that there is no written documentation supporting him desgning for the Torquay potteries. They may have copied his designs. The V&A have pieces of Watcombe which they attribute to him.

Just part of our hoard. Our children want nothing. They got fed up with the endless stff mining.

It is all about knowledge. Maybe knowing a bit more than the buyer next to you. Sometimes you have to work on a hunch that something looks right and not be afraid to buy it, if you can afford it, and research it. Happy hunting.
