I am curious about the origin of this chair, currently in Australia. I would feel uncomfortable leaning back on the frightening decoration.

You are right to be wary. She has the characteristics of a harpy.

Yes, a siren is possible, perhaps even probable. I considered both & decided to go with the scarier one. Artistically they're pretty hard to tell apart.

There may only now be an edition of Homer translated by a woman, but the poet Alexander Pope, who also translated both volumes, believed & argued that the Odyssey was written by a woman & that the author inserted herself into the story as Nausicaa.

If you don't like the chair, just send it to me.
The bentwood construction reminds me of Thonet bentwood. Thonet was a German who made his first famous chair in Vienna in 1849, which covers both countries you mentioned.;)

The style of painting also reminds me of that on a ca 1850 doll's bed painted by one of my ancestors. He worked in the south Dutch-German border area.
No harpy on the doll's bed though. Stylised Gothicky wolves' heads, which may not be much better on a child's toy.;) But I always loved them, I also played with it as a little girl.

So 1850s would be my time frame, and possibly Germany or Austria.
But let's wait for the others.

Nice chair! I am thinking not quite that early. More like 1880 or so to my eye. The back seems to be printed and would not expect that on an earlier piece. Agree that this has a Germanic vibe.

The bent wood support made me think of that also. They made nothing of this sort, as far as I've seen. I can also see what looks like a screw holding it in place. This too may indicate when it was made.

I think we should see the bottom of the chair, the back and a better image of the castle. They are all part of the clues.

Yes, I thought it had a German feel to it. Unfortunately I shall not be able to get more photos. I snatched them as I was walking through an old house. There were 12 of them.

Cool chair. But what was the tag for? Part of a house sale or auction? Looks like there’s a ID or item number on the tag. Part of a catalog? Wow 12 chairs, was there a matching table?
