Two German Steins

I got these two German Steins for very little money, so I bought them, even though I'm not a fan. The little on is 9" or 23 cm and the larger one is 11" or 28cm (incl. Lids). They both have a sticker which say: "Golden Crown 1886 E&R Western Germany".

The little one doesn't have any writing on, but the large one has a sentence in German on it, which is: "Mit Trinken und Lieben warden die Grillen vertrieben." which could be translated into: With drinking and love the crickets will be chased away.

Well in German it does sound better because it rhymes, but doesn't make any more sense.

The Steins are both in an excellent condition, no chips, cracks or anything and must have been cleaned on a regular basis (they weren't even dusty).

Well, since I don't even have a slightest clue about Steins, does anybody know anything about particularly these two? Is there still a market out there (I've seen some on ebay, but...) ? How old could they be? Any info is appreciated!!!

 

Western Germany is post WWII - 1949
Ended with Reagan in 1987 "Tear down this wall".

E & R is for the Ebeling & Reuss Co. of Philadelphia, PA - yes Philadelphia. It seemed they imported porcelain, earthenware, ironstone, etc.. from factories in Germany, Czechoslovakian, and other European countries. The company was founded in 1886 - reason for 1886 on the sticker.

See #2 at the top of the page for info about the company then scroll to the 2nd from the bottom row for a sticker like on yours. Yours was used around 1955 - "Image 1-30"

Clutter, thanks for your help, but since I'm German I actually know that Western Germany existed from 1949-1990 (the wall came down on November 9th 1989). I just would like a time frame within the period of Western Germany (e.g. 70s, etc.). Important is that there is no copyright mark on the sticker, I couldn't find any info on this.

What I didn't know was that E&R was an importer from Pennsylvania

 

Thanks so much Susan! I haven't seen your post before! I have had a look, but the mark is slightly different (the cross is slimmer on mine and they don't have the registered sign). That's a little odd....

If made in 1955 it did not need a registered sign.

JMHO.
not interesting for collectors, millions around. sold to millions of tourists. found on fleamarkets as low as 5 €.
(und natürlich kann man die Grillen, die man im Kopf hat, vertreiben...)

 

Agree with Fid, these are everywhere, they would make novel and interesting planters IMO.

 

Thanks Fidbald! Well that is ok, I paid $2.99 for the little one and $3.99 for the large one. To be honest, I think they are horrible, but I have a family member who collects them, so I will give them to him Until I see him, they can collect some dust in my basement!

cluttered, don't bother too much about the theory. in real German life "western" was also used before by many companies - especially on the Rhine - since the 1900s.
and misused by the comniss of the GDR; they sold their krappo via import companies in the westzone under West and Western Germany alike, even to the US.
