It is based on a traditional Teke form, but I think it is probably a fairly modern copy made for sale. Bacquart, in his Tribal Arts of Africa, notes (in 1998) that "numerous copies of these masks have been made for the Western market". Similar to Eket sun masks, the round form lends itself to wall decor, and copies have been made by non-Teke (or Eket) artisans in West Africa.

    Thank you guys.
I don't know anything about African mask, so I am very happy for your help. The mask smells a bit strange; bit greasy and musty inside, so i hoped it was an old mask used in a real ceremony.. i now understand this is not the case:arghh:..

Is this mask still being produced?
and if i want to sell it, what could i ask for it?:shame:
