This thing is a honking 3" across. I think it's bronze. It seems to be a recognition/participation medal from a 1969 IBM recognition meeting in Montreal. Does anyone know anything about these?

I believe that it may have been made by Medallic Arts Co. We used to have one in my old town....Danbury, Ct.

I don't know how valuable it is, but IBM is very collectible.

As a nomadic IBM (I've Been Moved) kid, Danbury was the last of 5 moves we made during my childhood...I liked Greencastle, Indiana the best...the town was like Mayberry, RFD.

Would this biz be a spin off of the Danbury Mint?

The Medallic Arts stuff I've seen usually has edge printing.

This appears to be some sort of "give-away"/"souvenir" from an IBM event held in Montreal in 1969. (Nowadays, they always seem to give participants in these sorts of things a company mug!)

    The following is from
    http://molehole.org/~david/cics/c1969.shtml :

    June 1969
    8-11 (i.e. June 8-11, 1969)
SDD holds its first Professional Recognition Meeting in Montreal for 650 people, 18 from Hursley, who have "performed their assignments with consistent excellence". A similar gathering (PLAN/70) in Washington DC yields a nice quote from ex-IBM-er Dr Frederick P(Mythical man-month)Brooks Jr: "Every truly new product comes from the passionate, personal advocacy of one planner or engineer... "

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

IBM has some online archives here: http://www-03.ibm.com/ibm/history/index.html

I don't know whether there would be anything there... it looks like it was given at an internal function that was an annual recognition meeting for employees in one division of IBM. Those were heady times for that company.

I just found a couple of online historical pages that were quite interesting to read. This is one of them. It doesn't shed any light on identification of your medal, though: http://www.computerhistory.org/atchm/the-apl-programming-language-source-code/
