Cactus planter perhaps? It would have to be a plant that didn't require much water. Miniature cacti are still sold here in the States in garden centers like Lowe's. May have had a matching saucer or you could find a small plastic saucer that would work. Doubt it's US as the interior is unglazed. Or it could be a sample as you said. Sweet little piece.

Hope u have better luck than I did with Venus Fy Trap...I have had MANY house plants, mostly succulents/cacti.(one is 20 years old or more)..NEVER could keep a Venus alive .

I never had any luck with Venus flytraps either. I'm not sure I'd try one in this pot though. Flytraps needs to be kept moist and with an unglazed interior I'm not sure how well this pot would handle being in constant moisture. Might be best just to keep it for decorative purposes.

Venus’s-flytraps grow in moss, and putting a under dish constantly filled with water would do well. Biggest mistake is letting them flower. Cut it off early and the plant should thrive. Not a very pretty flower anyway. Feed it a meal worm or 3 if no flies around for a month. You will get 20-25 traps from one plant. Trim them off when they blacken.
    Good luck
