I know what a tamper is for (being of 'a certain age'), just didn't know where to place it on a pocket knife.

This is the kind of tamper I am familiar with, in front of the 'lodereindoosje', the two were a his and hers wedding gift to my great-great-grandparents:

What's a lodereindoosje? I think I have one of those in my collection...

A lodereindoosje is a Dutch scent box, ca 4-4.5 cm high. It contained a sponge with loderein or 'l'eau de la reine', 'the queen's water', which was a mixture of essential flower oils mixed with water. The queen was Elisabeth of Hungary, who apparently used it in the 14th century to attract a man she fancied.;)
Ladies would use the sponge to dab the scented water on their necks etc. The silver box would keep the sponge moist.

it is different from a vinaigrette box, which was used against fainting and bad outdoor smells. A vinaigrette is generally more flat and has a grille behind which the sponge soaked in vinegar and essential oils would be. The 'vinaigre' would be used to take a sniff of, not to dab on the body like loderein.
The inside of a vinaigrette box is gilded to protect the silver from the acid vinegar. Loderein is much more gentle on silver.

Sheffield was the great steel making town, so the cutlery went alongside. It's still made there, but is much down on what it once was.

    Nice link here: http://www.sheffieldcutlerymap.org.uk/

in your photo #2, the part you were asking about with the question mark - I think that is the part that is missing the pipe tamper piece:)

That is correct. So that means your knife would be an early 1900s smoker's knife.

THANK YOU, cx!!!!! I just couldn't visualize WHERE you meant!!! Yes! It does look like something is missing off that, but it also doesn't come all the way out.....the metal 'hook' stops at the edge! BUT, there is a slight indentation where a "tamper" would have rested!!! You all are the BEST!!!!! I had NOT noticed that slight indent before!!!! Sooooooo, basically a pocket-pipe-knife???? YEEEE-HAAA!!!! LOVE having it solved.....and DH has NO clue-YET!!!! And I'm betting, at least on my knife, it would have only come out to the end and 'flipped' around to the end of the knife for tamping!!? Funny, my FIL never smoked anything.....wonder who's it was....ah well!!

HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU.....LOVE HAVING THIS SOLVED!!!!! (But sad it's missing its tamper :( )
