Hello Board Friends - I am seeking any opinions regarding this neat pottery comport I picked up at auction recently. It stands 4 1/4" tall and 6 1/2" across the top. The only marking is the number 5795 that appears to be hand inscribed on the bottom. It reminds me a bit of German majolica (maybe post WWII?) but I'm really at a bit of a loss. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

P.S. I'm not sure these pictures will come through. For some reason I'm not getting the option to load them as full images.

Which country or countries always put a bar through the upright line of a 7? Might be a way of eliminating some places right off the bat. Of course the US does not, but places in Europe?

Is that a tree, or a cabbage leaf?

    I don't see a line through the 7?

I'm with you. Looks like a leaf of some sort.

    Interesting piece of yellow ware

Yes there is no line, but without it the comport is unlikely to have been made in the country where they do put a line through. No?

I just went through my yellow ware book and didn't see anything with that leaf

Thank you all for your thoughts. I completely forgot that German manufacturers put a line through the seven. I guess that rules them out and I'll need to start looking at other locations. It didn't strike me as American. Most of the American yellowware I'm familiar with is stoneware and this is a bit too thin. The four digit number also indicated to me that it's most likely not American as those are usually three digits. I was wrong about the trees too. Leaves make more sense. That's the problem when you're primarily a carnivore - vegetables are hard to ID!:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

Portugal seems to produce a lot of pottery with cabbage leaves.

Maybe it's just me, but this photo seems strange, why would anyone make a comport with a hole going down into the base? But like I said, maybe it's just me :)

Image search brought one up on eBay right now. Seller is way off calling it antique Etruscan Maple leaf, heehee. The glazing is so very nice but being hollow stemmed and lumpy on the inside it looks like a hobby mold.

Pretty well the whole of Europe puts a line through. We don't.
