Cigarette boxes almost always have a base of black cardboard over a thin sheet of lead, making the box much heavier than the actual silver weight.

I actually dont believe it is a cigarette box. Guessing on the size and shape of the wooden dividers inside. We pulled the wooden inlays out and scraped and tested. Seems solid. If it were a cigarette box it would be the largest Ive ever seen. About ten inches long by 5 wide. Assuming it isnt coincidence. And this really is from the silversmiths Cheryl pointed out, everything they make seems to be solid silver or gold. It is constructed nearly identical to boxes they are currently selling as picture frame boxes. The hinges are identical, the size and shape... Awaiting a reply from them now. Getting on towards the workday in Germany now. Fingers crossed.

Specifically a professor told me it isnt urdu arabic hindi indonesian or any other language he has come across teaching around the world in his lifetime. So Ill go with a signature or family name.

If I knew for certain what it was , I'd say so , but I know for certain what it's not.....so I said so !

Hebrew is written left to right, and this is right to left.

Signature sounds like a good fit !:)

You have not posted pictures of the underside or inside.

Do bear in mind that the prices when bought new bear no real relationship to the secondhand prices of this sort of item.

Its best if the pictures are cropped and toned down and inserted on here via the "Upload a File" rather than clicking links and going to the gallery.

Facsimile signatures are not all that uncommon on silver - especially on presentation pieces - and signatures are typically illegible. Whoever owned the box originally would have known, but maybe no one subsequent.

that 925 looks Swiss. for small stuff they didn't bother to mark properly.
if it were German then it had moon and crown.
hot spots for filthy rich Arabs: Geneva, Lucerne, St. Moritz etc. pp...
most probably the silver smith thought them only filthy and made a joke by using the German eagle instead of a falcon.

Confirmed Emil Brenk 1930's cigarette box. I hadnt realized they made such large desktop cigarette boxes. I always thought of the small cases. Without prompting the collector we brought it to immediately identified it. No hesitation.

Sorry Fidbald, don't really feel a need to convince you, it is what it is - though not sure why the '925' or the lack of a reichsmark indicates that this is not German, despite regulations, a lot of German silver bears a wide variety of differing and 'improper' marks. The reference above is from a trademark search, it's the German registration, but they also registered their mark in other countries as well, including the U.S.

An added bit for the OP - the link below shows a bit fancier box by Emil Brenk, a leather-lined document box with a signature under the engraving from 1978, difficult to see, but the marks shown on the engraved plate are 'EB 925 STERLING'. Haven't seen the interior of your box, but the wood interior would point to use for cigarettes or cigars, again, one of the companies specialties...
