DOH! It's a combination lock snuffbox in poor condition, I uploaded the picture by mistake and forgot to delete it, now I'll leave it or it will make your question look a bit dumb. :)

It is a shame and a tragedy!

Still a lovely item, and a bouquet of short flowers would hide the damage.

Would it be worth making the entire circumference new? I wouldn't think piecing it a good idea then make something of the remainder?

Finally Ivan could stand the hot coffee streaming down his chest no longer, burning his skin and staining his white robes. No self-respecting Cossack should suffer like this, he had often reflected. He had always suspected that the fence-like cornice circling the top of the cup was somehow responsible for his discomfort, and early on the morning of the 26th, he gathered his nerve and his tinsnips and did the deed. As soon as he tried the altered cup he realized victory was his, and he stood up and exalted in his powerful, resonant voice "veroshnika!" rapidly three times as was his custom on festive occasions.

Tinsnips, nah, he just bit it off, and spat it into the Don.

You know how Cossacks conquered enemy territory, right?

Ouch! Spring, who wound you up??!!

And I agree with King -- Not scrap! Remove the rest of the edging, polish it down, and voila!

The handle is attached to the pierced part, so some would have to remain, which I think would mark it out as a Frankencup.

This cup looks like I polished it in the past. I have ruined some things while cleaning them because I'm too intense: I hold it too tight, rub too hard, just plain overdo it. I think this is due to the influence of my German Grandmother who was the same way, we both just clean too hard. I once watched her use a toilet plunger on a dirty shirt with stubborn stains, and it actually worked! Attack that dirt!!

I would leave this just the way it is. I don't mind some problems with antique pieces. But then, I would worry about never being able to find a cup insert, LOL! It's very nice.

Ola - love the plunger story!

    And I have another doozie.

One of my great-great aunts cleaned the wooden stairs (in a mansion, no less!) by tapping with a hammer and then removing the dust with a needle.

    ERK!
