I have seen others that are signed twice & have never figured out why, as neither seemed too faint to read.

I have never seen one that he signed more than once using more than one version of his signature. I came to realize that the ones signed with what looks like Sll/Sel/Sle were by the same hand as the ones with the signature that looks like Silz because the 'S' is exactly the same on all & after you've looked at enough of them you begin to recognize his style & level of technique. I had seen I don't know how many with Silz or Sll before seeing one with the full name & recognizing it as his for the same reasons. :)

OK, question of the day: which bothers you more? This:

    or this?

First one looks to me like she has things writhing on top of her head, like Medusa.

Can't tell you how often, in conversation, I find myself saying: I think I read somewhere... or maybe heard on public radio... or maybe I'm just making it up.

There is no Silz/Sll/Schmoll Rosetta stone. :)

Oh it's the second one. It's just wrong, categorically wrong, I'm-too-lazy-to-even-try wrong.

The first one. Well, it's more I-know-this-is-off-but-I'm-in-it-now-and-can't-stop wrong ...

    And I've been there. :joyful:

I swear to you that my first draft included the word "gravity," but I couldn't make it work. :hilarious:

sometimes it's a certain advantage having been brought up where they use old expressions and words. many different patois around in Switzerland.
now I have to watch TV. England vs Norway lady's football.

@Jivvy A new one for you. So you can work your own photo magic, here's the original photo, cropped & leveled out a bit:

All I could do with it:

(fwiw, I think the "descender" (three or four letters in) is likely a random scratch)

EDIT: now I'm thinking I'm wrong about that.

    Not sure.

I'd like to contribute that I'm pretty sure the most recent sig ends with a capital "R".

And that's everything I've got on that one. And I could be easily convinced that I'm wrong. :bag:

Would love to hear what others are thinking.

Cameo is set in a piece of jewellery that makes it difficult to photograph. Deliberately not telling you what seller thinks it says, so as not to bias you.

Just found I never posted this, started hours ago. Will tell you seller thinks the last letter is k, but agree it is probably R. First letter also looks like R, which is what seller sees too, but I can see that it might be a lackadaisical B. Seller sees the downstroke near the middle as part of a letter. I'm inclined that way too, although see more possibilities if I ignore it as a random mark. Unless that big slash right before the final R is meant to separate it from what comes before, have to see it as a misfortune without significance.

I can make an argument for the first letter being an R a B... or even a P. :joyful:

I think the big slash before the final R, if we're talking about the same thing, is just a reflection of the setting.

It's unfortunate that the seller couldn't upload a higher resolution image. Even with the exact same angle/lighting, if a higher quality photo, I might be able to eke out some of the second half. As it is, the jpg compression artifacts are too much to contend with in the lighter patch.

Ending with a "k"... I'm going to have mull that over. Handwriting-wise, I think it makes more sense than a capital R.

Of course, it's a signature, so "sense" need not be involved.
