I'm not sure how I feel about their wares. Tribal arts. Which tribe would this be exactly? The bone pieces are water buffalo carved in Indonesia. Are fossilized mammoth & walrus ivory so readily available they can afford to use them for this stuff? Some of these definitely look like Indonesian work, so guessing all are. Are they being designed in Indonesia as well? What is your take on them?

It is definitely glass. Photo does not completely capture how shiny, vitreous, the material looks where it has chipped. The shape of the chips, tending toward conchoidal, is also different than you get with porcelain. Looks like bisque, from the outside.

    Still in Vienna? :kiss::kiss:

When I saw this at "thumbnail" size, I was certain she had the most fabulous hat. :hilarious:

Can anyone say what this one is made out of? I rather like her appearance but I can’t tell if this is supposed to be a goddess or an idealistic depliction?

And are those spots just dirt? How do you clean cameos?

My first inclination was glass, but there is a curious "crease" that seems to be at only one level of the material (as if revealed only when you get down to that level -- not in the bouquet, not in the top layer of hair).

    So... lava?

    Obviously guessing, here.

(truthfully, it looks like marble to me, but I think that's the dirt :hilarious:)

It’s being totted as lava. I just think it looks super smooth and like plastic? Also I thought lava was dark and not white?

Well there are shiny bits in her hair that made me think of the "lava glass" that @Bronwen recently mentioned.

I do think it legit comes in white. Don't know if it was treated to make it white, though.

Someone with more knowledge will be along shortly. :woot:

This one actually is white lava, unlike the one I showed you. She is Tyche/Fortuna, holding a cornucopia filled with flowers. Her 'mural crown' represents her role as protector of a city.

Lava is difficult to clean. Maybe because it is Tyche, it fortunately appears to have more light surface grime than any soaked in stain, so there's a chance of improving it. You can use plain water with a dab of dish washing liquid. Let it soak a little, but not too long, then see what a soft toothbrush will do, not applied over vigorously. A white eraser might help with more persistent places. I have a vintage typewriter eraser, designed like a propelling pencil, with a white eraser, that I use sparingly for some types of discoloration, such as those black spots.

She's very nice. I didn't research, but there is probably an engraved gem/intaglio behind the image.

    As is this one:

Seller of second cameo knows this :
ANTIQUE GOLD LAVA GLASS CAMEO BROOCH PENDANT 1870
Guess because it's in 9ct they think a price of 195 GBP (nearly 250 USD) is justified.

First cameo, also in 9 ct, is described as:
9,CT GOLD ANTIQUE LAVA STONE QUEEN ? CAMEO BROOCH, 11.86,GRAMS,
and can be yours for 150 GBP (190 USD).

I don't either. May be the natural color of a lot of it. White pieces seem to be white all the way through; brown pieces, when chipped, often show white underneath.

Pretty sure, no matter where I stand in the room, the eye on that first one is following me.
