Featured 14k pendant, mosaic, some kind of opal?

And the craft of making them is called confusionism or perplexity.

People tend to misspell it and write it with a capital C for some strange reason.

For the handfan, I always carry with me a simple, wide, chinese vintage black paper and bamboo one, coming from my mother who bought a bunch of them 40 years ago and used them regularly (she was, as I am... a hottie )

It is possible, but the examples shown in the links are very bright pieces, I'm thinking maybe these ammolite pieces may have been coated? Which would explain the dull color, and perhaps the beveled shape around the corner perhaps and some protection. I could be wrong though, but I love to learn

 

The information in the link does say it is a doublet,so not actually a real black opal,Mexico does have some black opal but it is rare.

 

Doesn't a doublet consist of a thin slab of gem grade opal and some sort of onyx underneath? I think it's still considered geniune opal but not as valuable because of the supporting stone underneath... Not sure, I've always bought regular opal, never a doublet.

Triplets have a thin slice of opal with color but there are a number of grades depending on how much "fire/pattern" is visible.Doublets usually have a thicker portion of good opal glued to a dark stone base or black epoxy used.

Apologies for not getting back sooner, I don’t know much about opals but vaguely remember a thread about doublets and triplets here or the old forums, mine has a black backing as Holly describes above.

I think anund's could be too, it has the same rough edges on the chips. You don't see those on Australian opal mosaic jewellery.
