Again, not 17th C but no hoard of old books is complete without some volumes of The Spectator'

Old travel books usually do fairly well

Could be an interesting read since the King had recently been restored.

'calipers' are what caught my attention. :)

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I like the penmanship practice and (possibly) childish scribblings on the flyleaf of the first one. :) -- Looks like John, Samuel, Brain, and scribbles.

    Very nice group.

Tomorrow I take all these and more to be looked at by a specialist book auctioneer, down in the Cotswolds. We have six 40 litre (call it 10 gallon) storage boxes to go in the car.

We will be taking Janet's dad, a D-Day veteran, along for the ride. (No matter what we do to him with lavish meals, tiring scenic trips and holiday breaks, nothing has yet succeded in finishing him off.)

I will give a brief account of the auctioneer's verdict tomorrow, the balance of high rarity and poor condition will probably mean that most are saleable but the estimates will be low to modest. Having very little invested, we will be happy with whatever we get.

Trip completed, a favourable reception for the books from a very competent chap at the saleroom, neither he nor I expected any high prices but collectively the book hoard should fetch the equivalent of a few thousand dollars. They get a lot of international bidding, especially from Americans, who it seems have an appetite for 17th C theology.

They may hit the saleroom mid-September. This should more than cover all the expenses so far, leaving the antiques hoard as all profit. I did not intend to make such an extreme return, but so much extra stuff emerged in the actual clearance that my bid for what I had actually seen at the time has emerged as rather mean.

I'll just consider it as one time when the dice bounced my way.
