Featured Old dyed leather tooled? clutch - art noveau? deco? what......

I was thinking newer than '20s but not anything I know about.

What I actually am wondering is if that is letters I see on the round snap/rivet part in the third photo.

 

I was thinking late 1970s.
Many wallets were marked Genuine Cowhide.

I would think a 1920s wallet would have been made of a finer softer leather.

 

I have no factual info to provide, but I would have said "1920s, maybe 1940s, absolutely no way 1970s."

So there's that.

 

I know, I know -- companies buy snaps by the bushel and can have them for years after the company name is no more.

But this is from a 1932 newspaper.

 

I think we should be comfortable with a 1920s date.

Thanks for showing more pictures, Book, it's easier to see how well loved this wallet clutch is! I didn't see the wear in the first set of pictures. I can go with an earlier date than 1940s now too. Certainly the flowers design looks Arts&Crafts era to me.

 

The more I stare at this, the more I see early 1950s ish. That's based on having a number of bags that Ma bought new at the time. That tag, imo, would have been embroidered not printed in the 20s. The frame style, stamping, and even the mirror look right for then. And the press fastener, too. As to the company name, is there anything that suggests they didn't go on using the name for products?

 

Although that could happen, I don't think they would keep the "Co." as part of the product name. That would imply there was still a company going by the name "Waterbury Fastener" and the article that Jivvy found said that they adopted the Quigan name for the company.
