Ercol double drop leaf table?

Hi everyone

This is my first post so please excuse my lack of knowledge.

One of my family members passed away a while ago and I had to help clear put the house.

I was about to give this table and chairs to charity when I noticed a badge on each chair and under the table.

It says Ercol.

Does anyone know about this make? Is it classed as an antique?

Looking back at family photo's this table was in pictures from the 1970s

if anyone can shed any light I'd be most greatful.

That's about a £400 to £600 set down here in London. The blonde beech/elm combo is the most popular and the fact that it's folding is very popular. (Not oak, davey, they don't use it - even the dark Ercol is stained.) Could be anytime from the late 40s on, but I'd suspect 60s as well. It's VERY expensive very good quality handmade stuff, still family owned and traditionally made.

 

Wow I wasn't expecting that ! It's a pity I can't keep it as it is a lovely well looked after set but being 29 years old it's not my style haha.

It's investment furniture. I have Ercol armchairs which will still be good in a couple of hundred years time. Unlike Ikea.

Giving it to charity is a lovely idea , specially if there's no possible way you could keep it .. , or trade it to another family member.. , or sell it to an antique dealer,, , or store it until your tastes change.......which they will !

I'd forgotten the new John Lewis ranges especially had some oak. But given the age of that, I really doubt it's oak - from memory, they weren't using it then. My solid beech with elm has similar grain.

Depending on where OP is, a local auction house might help, although I'd try a private sale first perhaps. Or a good MCM dealer. If not, then an appropriate charity would be very grateful: BHF will happily collect.
