I am clueless there is something like glue or something melted on the enamel. The dark is not the silver under the enamel at least I dont think so as I can feel it and around the dark is a yellow color like when clear nail polish turns old you get that yellow color. Any ideas how to get it off without damaging the piece? 20150619_151848.jpg

I don't think that's guilloche proper. It looks more like lacquer over engine turned, with some of the lacquer missing and deteriorating in other places.

no it is maybe it is just my picture. It is sterling and ivory cigarette holder. I have another piece that goes with it I will take a picture of so you can see.

Ah, OK, that's better. I'm scratching my head now. It does look almost as if the underlying silver is showing.

That enamel damage is beyond repair. The color is corrosion of the metal.

but there is something over that I can feel it. On another note would the little dish be a ashtray? It is 2 1/4 across and 1 3/4 tall

Someone may have attempted a coverup of the damage with something like nail polish

Thank you everyone for you thoughts. It is still a very pretty set. I have one more question as I am going to try to list it tomorrow. I think it is from the 20's-30's what is your thoughts? There is no makers marks just stamped sterling.

I could see that in the hands of a classy woman from the 1920's...

    I've seen a couple.
    one saying art deco
    the 20's sounds credible
& while not in great shape, the ashtray with should bump the value considerably.
