I have looked all over for this shape, not even sure if its a cup or what, found two at the local thrift today. Both are signed M or B Hael Etain Fin 95% with an HB mark. I am coming up emtpy. It is 2 1/2" tall and has an odd handle. Thanks for looking! pewter1.jpg

The HB mark would be BH for B Haël, presumably. I can't find a French or Francophone tin maker called B Haël, maybe someone else can.

    don't know what's going on here ?

sorry to say, but that's 99.99 % wrong.

the EPU (European Pewter Union) was founded in 1977 and the earliest pieces I've seen marked with % were in 1978. from 1979 onwards the EPU introduced an own system with an EPU mark that contains a specific producer number and the percentage in either a simple round two-digit number or with the % sign; this was done because an EC legislation was in the making.

as always the EC legislation had to be converted to the national laws of every individual state; this caused some differences in the marks.

now, the problem with this fake here is: it copies touchmarks (probably an angel or the Munich mark) plus it has the percentage touchmark.

why then a % mark at all ? because in Germany the producer of such items can get rather a high bill from the authorities if it is NOT marked properly.

besides Munich there are other hotspots for such "historical" copies, especially Nuremberg, where I visited a shop and discussed with the owner about the wonderful copies he made of old WMF Jugendstil figures; of course he bent the law by slightly altering the figures and marking them with an own fantasy mark that resembled the WMF mark PLUS % mark.

I agree that this is definitely mid 20th century or later, but it isn't really a fantasy mark since it looks correctly marked for a 20th century piece to me. The Hb mark looks like a 20th century mark matching the etain and percent. But I don't collect 20th century pewter so don't know how to find that particular mark other than to use inet search and books. Also, it could be a coincidence that the Hb and scratched name seem to be the same - it could be a scratched in owners name that just happens to match the Hb in the mark. Especially since everyone has looks for Hael without success.

she was a nice person. also Pat was a very nice person when we worked together; at the start he was a bit afraid that I want to grab a piece of the cake because he wanted to earn money with the site due to his low wages as a simple postman.

I thought about her, and about posting it, but like you I couldn't. I am both glad and sad when it comes up every year though. She shouldn't be forgotten here. I am sure many members feel the same.
