I think it is for a microscope. The part below the slide and above the light source. The tinted lenses being used with staining pigments. The objective lenses focusing the light source for higher intensity.

I'm thinking the drawings were put in later? Or are original?

You never told us the size. Good photos make it look large. Knowing it was so small would have redirected our thinking. Just how big is it?

He gave the measurements in an earlier post:

    "
It is 4.675" diameter .375" thick. Inner circles are 1" diameter. Found in northeast Ohio USA.

We thought it was something for a projector however the four circles with patterns are completely opaque.

There are words inscribed around the edge that coincide with each of the 8 circles. There is OPEN, (4) OBJECT that coincide with the symbol drawings, N for the blue disk, S for the yellow disk, and D for the purple disk.

The back side of the 1" circles have a fine pitch thread.

Oops. Sorry @Npk2019 All the talk of projector wheels made me think it was much larger & did not go back far enough.

It still mystifies me. OK, does seem meant to be seen under magnification while attached to some apparatus. The issue of transparent vs opaque remains. I could reconcile the geometric shapes, sort of, for use with a microscope, but the symbols around them? Just not coming up with a coherent explanation at all. Maybe aliens left it behind?

Oho, that could be it. The symbols may refer to lens types.

The big dog has a pre 1923 Royal Copenhagen mark. The oak bottle has an inscription for 1933, the maker won a wood working prize. The mate cups are without straws, but one is silver mounted and one is gold mounted. The wolf is on a marble base with CH GRAMION signed in the marble (hard to immediately see) Pleased with our rounds yesterday. We got other small items but I immediately dispersed them amongst the hoard. The wolf and dog were 15 euros each.

Score! Daily bread plates have been around forever in one form or another, but this is the first French language one I've seen. (sheltered life probably) And a bronze wolf, signed, for E15? The Boxtops are singing in the back of my head "Get me a ticket for an aeroplane...."

I live in France, hence the language. This is quite a large one, so we are going to use it. We have a smaller one. I got a German one for our daughter who once won the German language prize at school. To this day, she says she cannot speak German.
