I think perhaps 20's. Brad will know. I am a HUGE proponent of sideboards. If one has room for one, they can store troodles of 'stuff,' and the silver service goes on top. And gorgeous candlesticks.

I'm a newbie so I haven't quite figured this out. Sheraton? How do I know if it's a replica or the real deal? I can't find it's twin anywhere on the Internet.

I'm not much good with furniture (though fortunately some here are) but just wondered if you've given a good look at the back, in the drawers etc for any kind of maker's mark.

 

How are drawers assembled too. Let's see the front outside corner of one.

 

My first instinct is 1920s. It looks like someone took the wheels off at some point, or some fell out and they just removed the rest. If it was made without wheels it's closer to 1930. If it had wheels, closer to 1900; I think WWI did for the wheels.

 

Yes, everywhere and nothing. However, the back is all veneer and has rot so maybe there might be under it? I can't tell if the dovetails are by hand or machine either.

 

I think we can safely conclude it isn't Sheraton. I agree with others,1930s,maybe even 40s. If your just getting into this,know right off the bat that youll never be able to know everything when it comes to antiques and collectibles,theres just too much info ! The best way to learn is to simply look at genuine pieces,the wood,the construction,etc. Don't call yourself dumb ! Even old pros make mistakes,its all about the learning. Its a nice piece,very decorative and functional. Id paint it some fabulous color,though that's not a popular notion here !LOL !

 

That really helps a lot. I really didn't want to paint it if it was something that should not be painted. Other than some chips, scratches and dings, it's sturdy. So, now I feel comfortable having some fun with it. Thanks!!!

 

Oh that's funny I was thinking how great it would look painted but painting veneer is a bit of a chore.

(I like the "creative" better)

 

Somewhere I have a book which has a similar piece painted a pale greeny-blue -- and it's gorgeous. And white, of course, always works. Incidentally, Zinnsser* has a paint which obviates the need for a primer.

*Not certain about the spelling, but all paint stores know the stuff.

 

Also, such a piece makes a wonderful addition to the baby's room. It's just the right height for a changing table, and will hold Everythingn the baby owns. Plus which, one can paint her name and birthdate in the space near the top.

 

I ran to the store after this and going to get started now! This is awesome!
