Hello, I am new to the community and was hoping someone here has some knowledge about the Cherub (or Angel?) on this piece of pottery. My father dug it up in Amsterdam approx. 60 years ago. I am curious to know what century it is from, what he is standing on and anything else about it. There are no marks on the back. I think it was a dish or bowl.

    Thank you!

Old as the dickens, from the looks of it. It probably is Dutch, but beyond that...no clue.

I agree evelyb30, I would be surprised if it wasn't Dutch. It's interesting, the body seems to be influenced by the Italian renaissance but the head and hair are so different. I love the movement in it, the way the sash flutters behind him as he is running.

The conversation was super helpful, thanks for attaching the link. The back of my shard is not covered in white glaze but does have a hanging hole. That may help with dating it. I will do some more research. But what I didn't really notice before is the damage on the front, it looks like the potter may have stacked something else on top of it when firing and it left marks. So perhaps it was a second? So interesting!

    Welcome, Ren_.
I think your cherub is very cute, I would have it in a heartbeat.:)
You have read the other thread, I wouldn't be surprised if your cutie is a shard of a 17th century Dutch piece.
The three marks mean it was indeed stacked, with three supports. I don't know the word in English, in Dutch those supports are called proenen. That also means the cherub was at the centre of the piece, which you could already see from the footrim.

I wonder what @Walter Del Pellegrino thinks?:)

The supports are called Kiln Stilts.

Wow! That's amazing, how did you find these? Thank you! Unbelievable that they have the same damage. Maybe this technique was new at the time? Too bad there's no dating.

Maybe you can look further into how these were found. It refers to a dig in Rotterdam. Maybe you can find something else about that. :)
