Thanks for all of the responses. No smell to these, lol! Maybe one day I'll break down and get a gem tester but I just don't come up with these mysteries too often. If I knew a jeweler personally, I'd give that a shot, but more than likely a jeweler would refuse to give a definite. They'd suggest getting a professional gem evaluation with them for some fee. Where I live they have grown tired of giving free advice knowing in likelihood it's going to be used in some Ebay auction.

Sooo.... I guess big question is this. Of the above mentioned gems, are any so much more valuable than the others? I was thinking that the overall value was due to the design and the 14K more than anything, and could just say I wasn't sure whether "ruby, garnet or pink sapphire". Would that be screwing up big time?

 

Based on what was said, I think garnet can be tested under UV light, and proven or excluded. But I don't know how glass can be tested. I mean, are you sure that these are precious stones? The fact that they are in gold settings, is not a proof, IMO.

Absolutely. I would say 'pink gemstones'.

Many of us use cheap diamond testers, which also test other stones. Could be worth looking into.

 

And it is so easy, I am surprised not everyone uses it. Silver smells like silver!

 

That's what I have. If it goes to three red bars and dings, it's a diamond. (maybe moissanite; some of those fool a cheap tester.) If it doesn't move at all or goes to one bar, the tester says it's glass. Anything else, color plus experience generally works.

And brass smells like brass, if you heat it up a little by rubbing briskly on fabric. (Not fabric you care about if the metal hasn't been polished.)

 

Absolutely. Brass also looks like brass and has no real lookalikes, so that is easy.
