I was struck more by the other hand. Very unnatural look for holding a child on your lap. Normally that hand would curl from the wrist across the child's tummy. In this case she's "holding" the child in place with her wrist instead of her fingers, causing the hand to aim away from its natural resting position. Or does it not?

You're right, Bakersgma. That hand looks "awkward" too. Hmmm. ??????

The knuckles on the hand to our right look arthritic to me. Stiff joints and contractures could explain the fist and the awkward position of the the other hand.

    Thank you, ScanticAntiques.

Oh, that is so sweet. That little girl is adorable. Love the lamb/sheep pull toy (or perhaps just a "rolling" toy because I can't see a "pull string").

I wonder what type of "necklace" the little girl is wearing.

The bows in her hair certainly add a softness to her hairdo which is like her mother's.

Aww thanks everyone! It was looking awful when I got it. Was really scared some of that teal blue deterioration would have got on the image and ruined it. Luckily, it was all on the matting & frame.. :)

It really is a sweet image!

They came in a large lot. Of about 30 Dags & Ambrotypes.

    Here are a couple others I got cleaned up so far :) IMG_8884.JPG $_57-1.JPG $_57-2.JPG $_57.JPG

Oh my goodness, ScanticAntiques, you are so lucky to have found them. They are even more fortunate that you were the one to find and appreciate them.;)

Yeah I feel pretty blessed on this one! I hate seeing things get ruined. They were all tossed in a wood cigar box w/ "colorado" on the side. Just in an antique store, being sold as one group.

I have cleaned the glass on these before, but never the mat or preserver. Do you clean those metal parts? If so, how? I have one in particular that is in an ambrotype that would be nice if I could remove the corrosion on the metal.

While I've only experimented with cleaning blue/green corrosion (I have not used the frame & matting that I tried this on) We used some brass cleaner, which took the corrosion off. The areas where the corrosion was, cleaned up nicely. Now I'm just waiting to see if anything happens. As people have mentioned, sometimes changes occur awhile after cleaning, so at this point it's still an experiment. haha It's been about a week or so and it looks the same, but I'm still being cautious.

For non corroded pieces, I just wipe it down with a soft cloth (Glasses/Computer soft type cloth). Luckily the majority of the time, matting is usually in good condition and only needs a quick wipe.

I have been just waiting for someone to say this. Even had a bet with my husband over how long it would take.

But 99% of the time the people looked dead, and were reclining.

    I understand... :)
My point was that such photos were taken and could be why she, the woman, appears odd to some.
That the baby's imagine is not slightly fuzzy looking seems to indicate otherwise and since the baby is looking straight at the camera I doubt she would be the one that might have passed away.
Would've helped if these people smiled though I know why the vast majority did not. :wideyed:
