Featured Weird plastic? Necklace

Most of the ones I've got look to have been strung on the wrong thread as they don't hang right or too tightly so again the beads don't hang right. You should do a 'how to' video.

 

Just to go back to this piece for a moment, I can't find anything similar online although all and sundry seems to be described as celluloid and Bakelite. What decade are we talking for it do you think?. If I'm going to earn a penny or two on it I need to get it right!

 

If I were guessing ... early 50s? I'm no expert on the celluloid stuff, and the color is throwing me off. Americans made similar pieces during the War, but they were made afterward too. I have no clue what British factories were up to for the Duration and afterward.

I tried to see if there was some kind of common knowledge about celluloid colors - in Bakelite this would be some version of butterscotch. So if you could ID the color of the pendant (I'm not gonna call it a Dangle, @Jivvy ) as Bakelite, that'd help...

The one they leave out is good old experience. Once you've handled enough of it, you get to recognizing it. Especially bakelite. Some pieces are harder to spot in the field than others, and some colors don't respond to chemical tests.

 

That's a great article. I will go through it later to see if I get any further. I'm convinced the chain is celluloid as it so reminds me of those dolls. I'll try to get my hands on some of the Simichrome stuff and will do some more research on Bakelite colours.
I'm just lucky someone else thought it was junk and tossed it in a £1.99 lot and even luckier to have you lot to help. I have learned so much but I am in total awe as to how much knowledge you all have.

Just a note a lot of black Bakelite and some red will not show up with Simichrome. 98% will show up with the cream but a few pieces will not. Your nose is the best indicator. Rinse with hot water and sniff.

The silver polish doesn't always work. Baking soda and water paste works on some black and red pieces too, but even that's not 100%.

This looks like such a perfect match between chain and pendant, seems like the same material. We're heavier solid pieces made of celluloid?

I gave it a good rub with my thumb but I couldn't really smell much!. I'll do the hot water test later.
It's very hard and I was reading about Catalin so it could be that?

 

I think that is a very astute point. The match is exact, not a near which I assume would be tricky to obtain in different materials?
My day is a scientist and walking encyclopaedia so I will ask him later if larger items could be made of celluloid.

Smell tests don't work for me either. I never smell anything when I should.
I regularly smell gas when no one else does, though.
I think it is a very nice necklace, and would have thought it was all bakelite, but wdik.
