I may cross paths with a Persian lady this week. I’ve misplaced the contact info of the prof who interpreted the Joseph tray, but all I need to do is browse the school’s website and I’ll find him.

Have sent the link back to here, to the professor, who sounded interested on the phone.

    Our kindly prof just replied:

“I tried to decipher the text from the images. I wasn’t able to do so. I could have done it if I had seen the whole tray closely with the help of magnifying glass.”

If you don't live near the DC area where prof is, you could send tray to me to take to him, so as to spare him the shipment aggravation. I’m interested in what says too so if you pay to ship it to me, I’ll cover return shipping cost, Only favor i ask of you is if you decide to sell it, give me “first refusal .

Spring, thank you so much for all of your help, but I think I will try to sell it on eBay. So I don't think I would ship it to you as that could get very costly. I'm thinking of starting it out at $700 and see where it goes or not. If you want to make me an offer, please feel free. Again thank you for your assistance to this point. What a great service you all provide! I have many more questions for you all if I'm not a burden.

My Persian friend says the script is not Farsi, but Arabic. The scenes pictured don’t look to her like anything from Persia.

She thought the pictures might have something to do with the Rubaiyat of Omar Kayyam, and maybe, but I couldn’t find similarities between the depictions in the book and those on the tray.

One thing about the tray depictions is that there are animals everywhere, particularly sheep, flocks of them plus some lone sheep.

I see from Eboo item that congrats are in order, sold at BIN price over $700! Good for me too, had to write Uncle a big check today! : x (

But if anything goes afoul with the transaction, keep me in mind. I’ll save all the photos of it for reference.

Wow, really? I thought that price was unrealistically high, shows how much I (don't) know. Anyone who watch the market on these hand-decorated trays can say why this went for so much? Can you provide a link to the ebay listing?

There were no closeup photos of the chasing in the OP's photos, hard to say if it really had quality.

Before using this as a data point, wait and see if the transaction is completed by the buyer. I’m lurking in the wings in case, for whatever reason, it doesn’t. I kinda like it, but not THAT much!

Buyer informed me it is Persian, early 20th Century. He is originally from Iran... and quite wealthy I'm guessing.

Interesting “take.” My Persian friend said the inscriptions weren’t in Farsi. Anybody figure out how that could be? Might be some logical explanation but the reason for that anomaly escapes me.
